Oops, I forgot to send this out when it was timely so here it is late ... The problem for Don Winter appears to be that he "lives" on the far side of a Xerox gateway that is shooting the "Date:" line in the header. The examples following are: Jacob Palme's header, Jacob's earlier header as Don received it, and a pair of headers from a message I received from the two Xerox mail handling systems. From example 1 <<Date: 20 Aug 86 18:48 +0200>> we see +0200 just as Jacob says. Now from example 4 we find <<Date: 22 Aug 86 21:49:00 PDT (Friday)>> but note that this header appears to be rather minimal, and in fact, the "message" contains another header between two lines of GVs. This contained header is the remnant of the header in example 3. ARPA net mail gets to Xerox through a single gateway (at PARC in California) and is sent to the addressee via the GrapeVine (old) mail system. (In the examples the addressees are DLs and so the messages are redistributed to the individuals therein.) Many people no longer have GV addresses, but are on the NS (newer) mail system so their messages must go through the GV <=> NS gateway. Example 3 is the copy delivered by the GV system; example 4 went through the gateway and NS mail. The gateway has built a new header, and shoved the old header in the message (surrounded by lines of GVGV...). However, the gateway has created a new date/time line <<Date: 22 Aug 86 21:49:00 PDT (Friday)>> AND deleted the old one <<Date: Fri, 22 Aug 86 09:57:04 pdt>> from the embedded copy. In Don Winter's case, the original date and timezone was lost at Xerox and not MIT.
