Having been brought up in a number of different places on the east coast, my pronunciation may be a bit schizophrenic, but I was taught that for a number of words, such as 'route', the pronunciation changes according to whether the word is being used as a verb or not - i.e., 'route 99' rhymes with 'root', but to 'route interconnect' rhymes with 'out'. Another interesting point about 'route' is that 'router' always has the 'out' pronunciation, rather than 'root'. Beatriz Infante, HP Design Aids Lab
