Association for Computational Linguistics Call for New Members The Association for Computational Linguistics is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. In that time, it has been a member of the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) for 14 years. Recently, AFIPS by-laws were changed to require a minimum of 1500 personal members for a constituent society. In order to remain a constituent society, the ACL needs an additional 200 members by August 11, 1982. In order to encourage new memberships, the ACL has established a special dues rate of $10 (U.S.) for new members during 1982, a 1/3 discount from its normal annual dues of $15. The ACL publishes a bi-monthly American Journal of Computational Linguistics, in a paper-complemented-by-microfiche format (it was previously just microfiche). It is a fully refereed journal, and, in addition to full length articles on various topics of natural language processing, includes abstracts of related technical reports and papers, book reviews, and meeting announcements. In addition to publishing the Journal, they hold a national meeting at least once a year, with published proceedings. They describe themselves as "an international professional society with membership open to any person or institution whose professional goals relate to computational linguistics." In addition to their AFIPS affiliation described above, they are associated with the International Committee on Computational Linguistics (COLING). Anyone interested should send their names and addresses, together with a check for $10 identified as for Anniversary Year Membership, to: Donald E. Walker ACL Secretary-Treasurer Artificial Intelligence Center SRI International, EJ278 Menlo Park, CA 94025 USA [Graduate students are especially encouraged to join.]
