If we did indeed try to change the spelling of english to make it phonetic, what would happen to homonyms? Quite often the written language needs different spellings for words that sound the same because written language does not have the capability for inflection that spoken language does. One might suggest, of course, that there should be no homonyms, but that is another kettle of fish, and much harder to resolve. Brad Templeton
