The funniest language related situation that I've been in was at the wedding of some Chinese friends a few years back. The ceremony was a tradition Protestant ceremony, and the pastor had gotten through most of the service. Finally, the moment arrived, and the pastor said, "With this ring, I thee wed." The groom dutifully responded, "With this ring, I the wed." Scott Deerwester Purdue University Libraries
