[net.nlang] < heighth

danny (11/29/82)

The pronunciation "heighth" is not at all limited to !hardie's
region of Saskatchewan. It is commonly heard in various parts
of the eastern U.S., for example.

Many dictionaries include it, calling it "dialectal."

"Heighth" is not surprising:	wide - widTH
				broad - breadTH
				high - ??

hardie (11/30/82)

As I explained to several mail replies that I got, I am from England and had
never heard any variations on the pronunciation of 'height'. Danny's
explanation of the derivation sounds quite reasonable.
