With respect to the age of the definition of intelligent--
the dictionary copyright is 1981.  Aside from which, I really 
can't see a dictionary defining "intelligent" as "able to perform some
of the functions of a mathematician."
BTW, except for the substitution of 'mathematician' for 'computer,'
the above quote is verbatim this time.

Certainly many of US use intelligent that way, as in "intelligent
terminal".
