[net.nlang] where does the word "flame" come from?

Where/when/how did the usage of "flame" as we all know it (i.e.,
flaming on the network, etc.) come about? I have never seen it
used with this meaning outside of USENET.

I suspect if you wrote a letter to the editor of your local paper
and began it with	<FLAME ON>      , he wouldn't have a clue
what you meant.
