[net.nlang] single quote = pop

lew@ihuxr.UUCP (06/13/83)

We used to call a single quote a "pop", which is short for apostrophe.
I can't understand how this nice little piece of nomenclature, which
fits in so comfortably among the "bangs" and "burps" and so on, got
overlooked in favor of the prolix and unimaginative "single quote".

If the character
	'
is "pop," then I guess the character
	`
would be "push?"

Other names not yet seen on the net:

	#	hash
	*	star
	~	twiddle
	{	leftit
	}	rytit
	?	whatmark

Excuse my ignorance:
	What's a burp?
