Re : burl.175 from Curtis (The Mad Programmer) Jackson Curtis' naming scheme points out a problem with ASCII, that is < and > do double (or triple) duty as characters. Not only are they used for i) Less Than and Greater Than, but also ii) for Left Angle Bracket and Right Angle Bracket, and iii) for file redirection in Unix, Three quite different usages. Presumable there should be six different characters. There are different names for the first two usages, but no accepted name for the third usage. Dave Methvin formerly of uvacs used the names "In Hoinkey" and "Out Hoinkey" for Unix file redirection characters. I like these names and hope they become industry standards. (For brevity, "hoinkey" can be shortened to "hoink.") joe wilson Univ. of Virginia uucp: ...decvax!duke!mcnc!ncsu!uvacs!jnw CSnet: jnw@uvacs Arpa: jnw.uvacs@udel-relay

An alternate suggestion:
> guzinta
< comzouta
which can be shortened to "inta" and "outa."

No, no, no!! "|" is gozinta: ls gozinta awk gozinta sort. - Chris -- UUCP: {seismo,allegra,brl-bmd}!umcp-cs!chris CSNet: chris@umcp-cs ARPA: chris.umcp-cs@UDel-Relay

Forgive me. Of *course* `|' is guzinta (sp?). Our technology is rapidly outstripping our ability to name it.

In the context of redirection I usually call them: > into < from | thru -ptr- ...harpo!utah-cs!pab
