Does anyone know where the word 'kludge' came from? About 2 years ago I checked a few places like Webster's unabridged dictionary without success, and had forgotten all about it until last week I saw an ad (in a in-flight magazine on a plane) for a carry-on luggage bag with all sorts of pockets and zippers called the Kludge (TM) Bag. It has 2 new features over the older editions. 1) entries are tagged with the date of first use (much like the OED) 2) There is an offer to answer questions of meaning/etymology if you send a SASE to the company. kurt horton pur-ee!uiucdcs!horton

#R:varian:-16400:uicsl:8600010:000:172 uicsl!preece Jul 20 08:35:00 1983 Unfortunately, in this case the Ninth New Collegiate gives a date (1962, I think) but says origin unknown. So I imagine their research service wouldn't be much more help.
