Thanks to all those who send responses to my dieresis puzzle. The best answer came from Chris Torek who gave a general rule whereby a dieresis is appropriate when a prefix ends with a vowel is followed by a stem beginning with the same vowel. Examples include "cooperate" and "reenter." Several people pointed out two words that don't follow this rule, "naive" and "noel" Thanks to all who answered. Martin Minow decvax!minow
