[net.nlang] 'Hacker' and software persons

garey@tekid.UUCP (Garey Fouts) (09/23/83)

Since when did the term 'hacker' ever have a good meaning?

It has (in the computer industry) always been a term for a
sloppy programmer or a computer nerd still in school. Professional
software folk take their work seriously.

Would you want to live on the 50th floor of a building designed
by someone who considered her/himself an architecture hacker?

Perhaps when the likes of 'hackers' take themselves seriously,
the media will take them seriously.
