First the good news, then the bad: Thanks to Paul Asente (asente@decwrl.UUCP) and Arthur Keller (ark@su-ai.ARPA) I have found at least one source for Indian typefonts. Stanford AI has collected Metafont source files for a large number of fonts, including one called "Novice Calligrapher's Simple Devanagari". The files are stored on the SU-AI (SAIL) computer and people with access to the arpanet can get at them directly using FTP. The files are: NCSD10.MF[TEX,SYS] NCSDBB.MF[TEX,SYS] NCSDSL.MF[TEX,SYS] SUBRTN.MF[TEX,SYS] DEVNAG.MF[TEX,SYS] You should FTP these in ASCII mode. You needn't log in to do this. (For those of you unfamiliar with FTP, the series of commands I used here at ut-sally to access the files was as follows: ftp -n -v su-ai cd [TEX,SYS] get NCSD10.MF get NCSDBB.MF get NCSDSL.MF get SUBRTN.MF get DEVNAG.MF bye If you think you can use Metafont files but don't have Arpanet access, let me know by mail and I'll send you a copy.) Now for the bad news: I haven't tried to use these yet, for a variety of reasons. For one thing, ut-sally doesn't support Metafont. Arthur Keller even tells me that "Metafont is written in SAIL and only runs on DEC 20s and DEC 10s," although our local wizard claims that a pascal version of Metafont suitable for Vaxen is expected here any time now. Another host here at UT is supposed to run Metafont, but I haven't been able to get access to the machine yet and am not sure what I'll find when I do. That means that I'm still on the prowl for Devanagari fonts, so if you know of something somewhere and haven't yet spoken up, please do. The ideal would be something already formatted for scribe or troff; second best would be a raw raster definition or even something procedural hacked out in c or pascal. Many thanks to those who offered their help or asked to hear about it if I found anything. I'll keep you posted about new developments. ---- Prentiss Riddle {ihnp4,kpno,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle riddle@ut-sally.UUCP
