Well, Chuqui (cae780!chuqui) is right: it's been about two weeks since my original posting, and my proposal for new ethnic/linguistic subgroups of net.nlang "looks like it will fail for lack of long term interest". I got some enthusiastic replies from a handful of people in favor of some particular subgroups, but not enough support to justify the creation of any. Here is a summary of what was voted for. I am posting this list so that even if no new newsgroups are created, other interested people can contact the nominators for private discussions by mail (or for discussion in plain- old-vanilla net.nlang). Many thanks to the following people: net.nlang.chinese houxz!llf net.nlang.esperanto Andy Behrens decvax!dartvax!andyb net.nlang.french John C. decvax!dartvax!johnc net.nlang.yiddish Alan Driscoll ihnp4!allegra!alan general "yes" votes Andy Kegel (particularly interested in a ihnp4!ihuxq!agk comparative "net.nlang.ethnic") houxk!jmg Bill Ramey rayssd!wjr Steve Aldrich (particularly interested in Asia) ihnp4!ihuxj!amra I was interested myself in net.nlang.spanish, net.nlang.german and net.nlang.india. Oh, well. I still don't think it was a bad idea. Maybe there'll be more interest a year from now. In the meantime, general linguistic/ethnic/cultural discussions are always welcome in net.nlang. ---- Prentiss Riddle {ihnp4,seismo,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle
