I don't know how the capitalization of "I" began, but I can give an example
of similar selective capitalization in another language.  In German, when
one writes a letter, one capitalizes all 2nd-person pronouns (in any
declension).  This is because it is in the "German national character"
to assign some importance to our audience.

	I used to be a German national character,
	but have since been "naturalized",
