[net.nlang] synonyms for "gentlemanly"

ken@ihuxq.UUCP (ken perlow) (01/11/84)

Thanks for the correxion--of course "gentle" (pl. gentles) is a
real word. Now I'm trying to like it, although I had my heart
set on something Saxon. To whomever I slighted I'd say "pardon
me," but I'd rather be forgiven. For pennance I have spelled
"correction" with an "x".

I take my penn in hand to ask you what you meant when you wrote "pennance"
in the pennultimate line of your correxion. Did you refer to the pennalty
you paid?

Hang on, while I slip into the vernacular....
Eeh bah goom, that's better. Aye, well then ... Ah'd not bother
goin' round callin' folks 'gentles' if ah were thee lad. Oop in Yoorkshire,
wheer ah comes from, that's a word as means a maggot. Folks as goes
fishin' a lot could tell thee a few stories about them boogers....

Sorry about that. I meant to say "Penzance" (as in pirates thereof).
Penzance is a lot more fun to do than pennance, or even penance, as
any G&S buff can tell you. Please accept the correxion, or if you'd
rather, the correxxion. Next time I'll do Pinafore (as opposed to
Pinnafore).
