[net.nlang] "Play" as term for printing out?

dave@utcsrgv.UUCP (Dave Sherman) (03/19/84)

The girls in the word processing department here (old IBM
system) consistently use "play out" as the verb for obtaining
a printed copy from a diskette. I have always used "print out"
or "run off" (my experience in these matters has been almost
entirely on UNIX systems).

Has anyone else ever heard the term "play out" in this context?

Are there any non-girls in the department? If so, what do they say?

My dictionary (American Heritage) says `play' can mean to "discharge."
Maybe that's where it came from. Also, one "plays out" fishing line,
meaning that the line is discharged from the reel.
