[net.nlang] Regional expressions - Grinders in Massachusetts.

('cause cbosgd!mark says I should)

A few months ago when I was interviewing in the city of Pittsfield, Mass., I
also encountered the term 'Grinder -
a Meal in Itself!' on every little
food shop. No pictures, no explanations
offered. When I got back to my hotel, I
asked the obvious question and found out
they were what I (a Coloradan/Californian)
called a "submarine". The receptionist
at the hotel was quite amused that I
didn't know but had to go into a
detailed description as she had no other
references for it.

doing this on a fourty column screen.)

Subs and grinders are NOT the same. Grinders are put in the oven
and toasted for about 15 minutes.

P.S. They taste great, too!

Not to exclude other regional varities
Heros, Subs, Torpedos, and Zeps.

Sorry, beg to differ, while your regional pocket may differentiate
between Sub's and Grinders, a lot of places do not.
