Three words come to mind regarding this discussion. They are roof, root, and route. I say roof with the double O sound of hook or book. Easterners say it with the double O sound as in proof. Same thing with root. I say route like bout only with an r. Others say route to sound like group. gene foster ihuxr!ewf

At Princeton, I was watching the Mondale/Hart/Jackson debate last week with a roomful of people. Mondale referred to a 'roof' on something, pronounced like Gene does. The consensus in the room was that we wouldn't vote for anyone silly enough to pronounce roof that way! -- Stewart Wiener :-) "Read and weep as did Princeton Univ. Speaking of "roof, root and route" - in SW Pennsylvania there is a tendency to pronounce "pool" and "pull" identically, rhyming both with "rule". Another interesting pronounciation is "high-th" for "hight", which seems common in the mid-west. Was this introduced by a bad speller many years ago? Funny, the same people invariably pronounce "right" as "rite". Jim

Oh yes.... Another curious pronunciation I hear from a few people here in Indiana is that "push" is pronounced almost as "poosh", with a long double-o. Takes a little getting used to.... -- -- Jeff Sargent {allegra|ihnp4|decvax|harpo|seismo|ucbvax}!pur-ee!pucc-h:aeq Have you hugged your junk mail today?

Coming from an area between the East and the Midwest (eastern Ohio) I seem to split the difference on root and roof: root rhymes with shoot and roof tends to have the oo sound of book (but sometimes the other sound creaps in). Route sounds like root or rout, depending upon context -- but I haven't figured out exactly what about the context matters (It's not noun vs. verb).
