[net.nlang] another regional pronunciation

deborah@avsdS.UUCP (04/13/84)

When I lived in Houston, TX, I noticed a few regionalisms there:

Houston is not pronounced like it is spelled; rather 'Yewston'
Also, the word you ( the pronoun ) was similarly pronounced 'Yew'

I noticed the latter most when 'Happy birthday' was sung in school.

Then I visited London, where Houston was pronounced 'Howston'
and Euston was pronounced 'Yewston'. Confused me for a good while.

Houston has a few other pronounciation peculiarities - a cheerful
service station attendant said to me once, 'chick-it awl?'
