Mark Brader and Mike Robson both questioned my statement that "British Subject" referred to a subject of the Crown, which was what I was taught. Well, I was taught wrong. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, "Each member state has its own citizenship ... The status "British Subject" or "Commonwealth citizen" (the terms are for practical purposes interchangeable) is reatined as a common attribute of all citizens of Commonwealth countries." I find it a bit strange that "subject" should be applied to a citizen of a republic, but that seems to be the way it is. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
