[net.nlang] letters :: syllables ratio high or low

presley@mhuxj.UUCP (Joe Presley) (05/26/84)

This discussion of 'shit' being the longest single syllable word (if it is said
correctly) got me thinking of the game where you try to get the ratio of number
of letters (L) to syllables (S) at extremes. E.g.,

    strengths = 9 (highest?)
    plague    = 6
    ague      = 2
    elegy     = 5/3
    aa        = 1
    a         = 1 (lowest)

The challenge, dear reader, is to find common words (> 3 letters) where L/S is
either high or low.

PS. 'Aa' is a form of solidified lava.
PPS. The trivia question "what word of one syllable becomes two when letters
     are removed?" is answered above.
