[net.nlang] Ambiguity and punctuation

[This space intentionally left blank]

Here is a puzzle that was circulating at MIT (esp. in the MIT
Science Fiction Society) about 1966:

By adding punctuation, make as many different utterances out
of the words:

what is this thing called love

Ex.: "What! Is this thing called love??"

BTW "Thing" = Icelandic Parliament, so capitalising the word
approximately doubles the number of constructions.

Regards,
Chris

My favorite is

What is this thing called, love?

said with a british accent.
