[net.nlang] Semantic Reversals and Shifts

friesen@psivax.UUCP (Stanley Friesen) (03/04/85)

I came across an interesting semantic shif this weekend.
It is not a reversal. I found out the original meaning of the
word 'clue'. It is quite different from the current meaning,
but I can see how the shift occured - at the scene of a crime
a clue(old sense) may well be a clue(new sense). Take a guess!

It originally meant 'thread' !!
I can just imagine Sherlock Holmes crawling around on the ground
looking for threads!
