I would recommend anybody visiting Brussels to try English with natives before any other language. Everyone understood me during my recent trip. One hotel clerk was studying English during his spare time and he thanked me for giving him a chance to practice. The only person who couldn't carry on a basic conversation in English was a gas station attendant in a small francophone town 15 miles from Brussels. He apologized for not speaking English, and promised that he would start studying it soon. (Incidentally, he was extremely nice and gave me useful information on what interested me: house rental prices and availability--I am moving to Belgium in September.) Of course, every Belgian speaks English with an accent--but so do I! Marco Valtorta
