[net.nlang] The first interactive Esperanto conference on CompuServe

neal@druny.UUCP (Neal D. McBurnett) (04/11/85)

On Sunday the 24th of March there was an interactive conference in
the Esperanto language on CompuServe. CompuServe often sponsors these
sorts of things (kind of like a lot of people using write(1) at the same
time), but this was the first one entirely in Esperanto.
It was great fun. Since I can't speak very quickly yet (no one to practice
with!), having to type stuff in didn't really slow me down. The maximum
number of simultaneous conferees was 7, from CA, CO, NY and VA. The total
length was 2 hours. One of the participants runs the UN office of the
Universal Esperanto Association (headquartered in the Netherlands).
We discussed our personal interests, the UN office, some proposed instructional
software ("LOLO"), and other stuff. It was lots of fun!
The next conference will be sometime in the next few weeks. If anyone is
interested, CompuServe is easy to subscribe to: all you need is a terminal,
modem, and (I think) about $20. This includes an hour of connect time, which is
normally $6/hour. Visit your nearest Radio Shack for the starter package.
You only pay for connect time after that - no continuing membership fee.
All this takes place on the "Good Earth SIG": type "GO HOM-145".
