If somebody were to ask me to list, say, ten of the most seminal works of twentieth century analytic philosophy, I think I could come up with a reasonable collection. That is, I think I could pick ten books that most analytic philosophers would agree have decisively shaped the field (e.g., Quine's _Word_and_Object_, Kripke's _Naming_and_Necessity_, Wittgenstein's _Tractatus_, and _Investigations_, and so forth). I am interested in acquiring some background in linguistics, so I wonder if any of you folks would care to offer a similar list of "core readings" in that discipline. I am not certain if this sort of thing should be posted to the net or mailed to me, perhaps to be summarized. Use your own judgment, I guess. I thank you in advance.
