[net.nlang] etymology of Swedish word 'semla'

mlf@grkermi.UUCP (Matt L. Fichtenbaum) (02/24/86)

In Sweden there is a pastry - a cream-filled roll -
that is traditionally eaten during Lent. It is
called a "semla." I am curious as to the etymology
of this word. Replies by mail, please; no diatribes
about excessively fatty diets, eating luxury foods
while the world starves, etc. Thanks!
