Following are the contents of a "Letter to Airmen" I received from the FAA Bay Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) Facility in Oakland. I'm posting it to all of North America because of its potential general interest. In addition, following the letter are various relevant Bay Area aviation telephone numbers (ATIS, FSS, etc.) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ISSUED: November 9, 1984 EFFECTIVE: January 17, 1985 BAY TERMINAL RADAR APPROACH CONTROL LETTER TO AIRMEN NO. 84-4 SUBJECT: Increased Air Traffic Activities in the San Francisco Bay Area CANCELLATION: Janury 21, 1985 Superbowl XIX will be held at the Stanford University Stadium in Palo Alto, California, on Sunday, January 20, 1985. A substantial increase in air traffic throughout the San Francisco Bay Area is anticipated during the period surrounding the Superbowl date. The increase is anticipated to begin on Thursday prior to the game, and subside on or about Monday, January 21. The following should be considered to reduce delay and inconvenience to pilots arriving or departing Bay Area airports: 1. The additional workload for the Bay Area air traffic control facilities may limit additional services such as practice approaches. 2. Transient aircraft parking is limited at Bay Area airports. Pilots are strongly encouraged to check on availability of space prior to departure. 3. Pilots are encouraged to file instrument flight plans as far in advance as practicable, preferably four hours. 4. Pilots are reminded to obtain ATIS information for the appropriate airport for arrival and departure. There will also be an ATIS broadcast on the Woodside VOR (OSI, 113.9) containing pretinent Bay Area information. 5. Pilots should check with the appropriate FSS prior to flight for pretinent NOTAMs. A special NOTAM containing additional information relating to special activities and any flight restrictions during the subject period will be available. Advance planning for both arrival and departure will help ensure a safe and enjoyable flight.
