[net.aviation] Advisory for Motorgliders

FAA Advisory Circular for Motor-glider interests....

I just finished reading this month's Soaring magazine which alerted
me that there has been an AC issued for transition for "traditional"
glider pilots to motor gliders. I have obtained the actual circular
from the GADO here in Colo. (I haven't read it all the way thru) but
there is a recommendation that the new motorglider pilot be given
instruction encompassing cross-country flight, fuel management,
engine emergencies and several other areas.

It also recommends a minimum level of ( as I recall...) CFIG who
also holds a Commercial Power license as being the individual who
should be doing the dual with the new m.g. pilot.

However, (there's always one of those, usually bad but this time good)
if an individual has LOGGED 5 hours in m.g. aircraft prior to Jan 1,
1985 then the individual is considered to have met the intent of th
AC.

The AC number is 61-94 and was dated 7-14-84

Thought you glider pilots might be interested.
It seems like the area was growing too quickly to be unmolested by
regulation or "official recommendation" but these are the kinds of
things that my students had to be knowledgeable of anyway.

It's about time the motor gliders were taken into account, I have seen
FBOs' make claims that "glider pilots can fly places that have in the
past only been reachable by power aircraft pilots" This is a way of
thinking that can lead to getting in real trouble.

I have taken training in both power planes and gliders, the methods
of recovering from problems are different, something you better
know by instinct. If you are to depend on the ability of a motor
glider to fly like a power airplane, you better know how to fly power
airplanes.

So much for my first posting to the network.
