The 25 February issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology has a very short description of the 19 February incident involving a China Airlines 747SP. The incident started 300 miles northwest of San Francisco at FL 410. The engines were throttled slightly, but number 4 did not respond after power was restored. The flight crew reported failure of all four, but this was not confirmed by preliminary flight data recorder readout. Max speed was 297 KIAS, and at FL 370 the attitude was 62 degrees nose down! Recovery was at 9 500 feet. Pieces of the horizontal stabilizers and elevators were torn off, and this is shown in a picture. -- ARPA: Howard.Gayle@cmu-cs-g.arpa UUCP: {seismo,decvax,allegra}!rochester!cmu-cs-pt!cmu-cs-g!hlg USPS: Howard Gayle, CMU Computer Science Dept., Pittsburgh, PA 15213, U.S.A.
