> The horizantal stabalizer was not torn off by the descent perse, > but by the wheel outer wheel well covers coming off and hitting > the stabalizer. The wheel were lowered to reduce the dive speed. The news report I saw on TV shortly after it happened said that the gear "lowered itself" as a result of the high positive G forces which resulted from the pilot's attempt to pull out of the dive. Has this been contradicted by later reports? -- Doug Pardee -- Terak Corp. -- !{hao,ihnp4,decvax}!noao!terak!doug

The original posting that the wheels were lowered to reduce the descent speed was from the first news report I saw. Subsequent news reports had the correct version that the main gear lowered themselves due to G forces. I shouldn't belive the news services.
