Hi there ---
As a frequent reader of this newsgroup, and as a pilot
myself. (Since '77) I'd like to bring up a topic that has
little to do with the private pilot, but none-the-less has
intrigued me for many years...
The topic for tonite is "airships." I have long been fascinated
by airships: blimps, derigables, zeplins. (This may have something
to do with the fact that when I was 6 I went for a ride on the
Goodyear blimp...anyway...) What I'd liek from the net crowd
is a rousing (or so-so, at least an opinion) discussion on the
topic of bring back the airship for use as a cargo ship and as
a pleasure liner for passengers...
Viable? Trustworthy? Is it a navigation hazzard for small craft?
The ball is in your court...

Too many better alternatives. Try getting across the Atlantic by
ocean liner these days -- they've all gone the way of the dodo bird.
People will take cramped and noisy over slow any time.

The city of Tempe looked into airships for the police a few years back.
Figgered the police could sneak up on the baddies. They decided it
wasn't feasible. I don't remember why.

There is still some possible application in "heavy lifting", like some
big helicopters. Someone is working on a cross between a blimp and a
helicopter just for that purpose.
