[net.aviation] Continental O-470 valve problems

doug@terak.UUCP (Doug Pardee) (04/17/85)

The current issue of Aviation Consumer reports a mandatory service
bulletin from Continental covering O-470 (Cessna 182) engines and
cylinder assemblies built (or remanufactured) by Continental since
March 1984 (approximately 75 engines & 40 cylinder assemblies).

Seems that they were erroneously putting stainless steel exhaust valves
(P/N 626540) instead of chrome-plated valves (P/N 637881) into the
engines and cylinder assemblies, which have Nitralloy valve guides.
The guides chewed up the valves, putting metal particles into the oil.

So far, Continental has been picking up the bill for the repairs,
including 15 engines completely replaced.
