[net.aviation] Fuel consumption for 727 or 737?

mls@harpo.UUCP (04/17/85)

What is the operating cost/hour for a 727 or 737?
Or what is the fuel consumption/hr for those airplanes?

Peoples and Piedmont have a price war on Newark to Greensboro.
The fare is $29. On Peoples it used to be $60.

The distance is in the order of 500 miles, and flight time is about
1hr and 15 minutes.

Last fall I had the pleasure of writing a proposal to use general
aviation aircraft to replace using air carriers for corporate travel.
In my proposal, I noted that the average seat cost in a Boeing 727
from Chicago to Newark was $44.75 not including any non-aircraft expense.
I figured about 643 nautical miles (739 statute), and 1 hour 40 minutes
enroute.

Using these figures, derived from Aviation Week data, October 15, 1984,
these two airlines are losing their shirts on the fare.

(The following is an editorial comment:)
I am sorry to see Piedmont having to fight Peoples in a fare war.
Piedmont has always struck me as being a professional type of carrier,
while Peoples is somewhat rag-tag. (Really, what professional crew
would miss missing flaps on a 727 pre-flight?) I also am quite miffed
at Peoples attitudes about general aviation.

It's People Express, not Peoples. Think of it this way: it moves people,
it's not owned by them.

Hey the ATT attitude shows there ...........
People's is a cut rate airline but as proffessional as most.
As for forgetting flaps in a checklist........let's see
Continental landed on a taxiway once instead of runway.
American has landed on a wrong runway.
Eastern has had .............. and the list goes on.
The airlines engaged in price war are trying to capture
a market to monopolize it later..... ala old ma bell.
Also ala ma bell they won't loose their shirts on it
they subsidise low fare roots by charging huge fare on less
popular routes where they can get away with it ...cross
subsidising.
For cost calc need to know 727 model ie engine size and how
many passengers it carries.
45% cost is fuel so figure fuel use in following way:
.6 * max thrust * .25 = pounds fuel per hou per engine.
(.6 is specific fuel consumption .25 for fraction of
max thrust used at cruise at 30000 feet. )
Then divide by 6 to get gallons.
Airlines pay a little less than $1 per gallon for fuel.
So there you have it.
