The way I heard it, the 707 was being demonstrated to a bunch of
prospective buyers, and as Tex Johnson made a low pass over the
demonstration area, he did a slow, four-point roll. Several buyers signed
up on the spot. For this infraction of the rules, he was suspended from
his duties at Boeing -- for one day! -- and given a hefty bonus afterwards.
I have heard this story from several people, but the one who tells it best
is Steve Bourne of shell fame. Steve does a great rendition of aircraft
stories. If you ever get to meet him, ask him for the one about what the guy
with the privately-owned jet fighter (Starfighter, I think) did when ATC asked
him to report altitudes.
