[net.aviation] Blowing the controller's mind

My neighbor told me this story the other night. He is part owner of
a C182. He and several of the other partners are also ham radio
operators. Thus, they have a 2 meter rig on board their plane with
ground patch capability. Seems one of the partners was out flying
when the plane suffered a communication failure. So the pilot did
what any ham operator would do, he called up the tower on the telephone!
It took several minutes to convince the controller that the phone call
was for real.

I was once on a Navy C54 that lost its UHF and VHF while in a storm
going into Atlanta, and we patched through on the HF, by telephone,
to the tower for control. We had also lost a door and an engine at
that point. I had my sky-diving rig on board, and was seriously considering
making use of the open door.

HP is not responsible for anything I say here. In fact, what I say here
may have been generated by a noisy telephone line.

Does Sporty's have the market tied up on the Sony Air 8?
Has anybody found it at a discounted price?
