[net.aviation] Well, the Starfighter story I heard was...

Hmmm, all this talk about the "Starfighter story" reminds me of the
exchange supposedly between a F-104 pilot and the tower... back in the days
when the F-104 was, truly, "The missle with the man in it..."

The scene: AF hot rock just breaking ground at an Air Force Base
unaccustomed to the ways of the "Starfighter."

TOWER: Air Force Three Niner Zero, report when passing five thousand feet.

104: Roger, passing five thousand.

TOWER: Uh, no, I mean, when you pass five thousand. Say current altitude.

104: Ten Thousand.

TOWER: Wha..?

104: Fifteen thousand...

I heard the same story regarding the F-15. And after seeing the Streak
Eagle take off, I well believe it.
