Well, all the reminiscence about Daryl Greenamyer (the guy who put the Starfighter together by gathering scrapped parts) brought out a lot of good stories. But since nobody came up with the one I was thinking of -- and Steve Bourne hasn't posted anything about it either -- I thought I would give it my best shot. I can't tell it like Steve, but it remains a good story. It seems Daryl was preparing to leave a busy airport -- maybe even the very air show that David Smith saw the plane at. The tower says: "Report passing end of runway, then say altitude each two thousand feet till ten thousand." Daryl gets a bit hot under the collar at this suggestion, piles on full afterburners, and hauls the stick all the way back. He contacts the tower: "F-104 at 2,000...4,000...6,000...8,000...10,000...cleared end of runway!" -- Dave Fiedler {harpo, astrovax, whuxcc, clyde}!infopro!dave People Phone: (201) 989-0570 USMail: InfoPro Systems, 3108 Route 10, Denville, NJ 07834 Flight Instructor: "What would you do if I jumped out right now?" It is my recollection that Greenamyer was not the guy who scrounged to rebuild the plane, but was brought in to fly it after it was finished, and he wasn't the original pilot. I didn't hear any mention of his name at the time I saw it whole. David Smith ucbvax!hplabs!dsmith
