[net.aviation] Sullivan County International

matejcek@parvax.DEC (10/03/85)

Bob from CADMUS wondered why a huge, well-equipped and -maintained field
like Sullivan County International existed out in the middle of nowhere,
with virtually no planes there, no real scheduled service, et cetera.
The answer is casino gambling -- or the lack thereof. There was a
push to legalize casino gambling in Sullivan County, NY, some time
back, to give NY its own 'Atlantic City.' Some folks gambled that the
requisite legislation would pass, and knew that a decent airport would
be required. Voila! Sullivan County International. It's a great
place to practice ILS approaches in a cross-wind.....

(PS - you may have noticed an ad in the back of several aviation periodicals
for a rather large parcel of land surrounding the airfield, available for,
as I recall, $150k. Could be a gold mine someday.....)
