[net.aviation] Looked into your carburetor lately?

wool@oracle.UUCP (Chris Wooldridge) (01/31/86)

Just got back onto the net after convulsions of moving office from Menlo Park
to Belmont CA; thought I'd share an unusual problem with you.

For the last few months my turbocharged Mooney M20C had been displaying
strange engine problems. Whenever the turbo was engaged EGT soared, even
with little/no leaning. Gas consumption was as miserly as usual: < 9gph
at cruise. Problem only showed up when turbo'ing, but I was unable to fly
really high because the engine would run rough (due to the high EGT I
assume). Yet - here's the puzzler - look into it back on the ground
and the plugs would be fouled - with GAS! Finally got exasperated with
the situation, being without my high-altitude anti-icing security blanket,
and started taking things off the engine. Got the carb off and took it
to an accessories shop. Turns out it needed a complete overhaul, new
seals. Plus a soon-to-be AD on the floats (the old foam ones) which
was definitely the source of a lot of trouble. $459 worth of work.
But it fixed the problem ... had an opportunity to test it on a flight
SFO-SEA at FL200 last Monday and the whole character of the engine has
changed - for the better.

If you have such strange things happening with YOUR engine - and you
have one of those old Marvel carbs, you might like to investigate yours too!
