[net.aviation] Aviation Junk in Denver

wanttaja@ssc-vax.UUCP (Ronald J Wanttaja) (02/11/86)

I tried to mail this info to the person who asked where the surplus stores
in Denver were, but I couldn't get it through. All you others, please
leave now. There are no naughty bits contained in the following, only two
of the "Seven words you can't say on USENET," and everyone who doesn't live in
Denver will be offended. Go away.

Hmmm, it's been five years since I lived in Aurora, so I don't remember the
exact streets, but I'll try:

I bought the attitude indicator at a small junk shop just north of Colfax,
on Del Mar... at least I think it was Del Mar, 'cos I drove the Del Mar
Parkway from 6th ave to the store. They have a lot of surplus stuff, but
not too much aviation oriented. I was there just last September and bought
a surplus Navy radio, and didn't see the *other* attitude indicator that
was there when I bought mine. One thing on this store... DICKER! The
attitude indicator was marked $30, and when I offered the guy $15 he jumped
on it so fast, I know I could'a gone lower. The radio was marked $35, I
offered $7, we agreed on $10. I tore out all the guts and installed an old
tube radio, hooking up the tuner, volume, etc to the old controls. Looks
and works neat.

I bought a 25 pound practice bomb at a surplus place on South Broadway in
Denver, just north of the main drag that goes to Cinderella City. I
haven't been there in six years, so I don't know what they have now. Price
was either $3.98 or $7.98, I don't remember.

The 250 pounder (sniff!) is at a outdoors/surplus store on East Colfax,
just east of Chambers Road intersection. But it's MINE! MINE, I TELL YOU!
Once I figure out a way to carry it back to Seattle slung underneath my
C-150, I'll go pick it up :-). Just look for the place on the South side
of Colfax that looks like an old Bonanza Snake Pit.

If you're going to Aurora anyway, check and see if the "Kent Aviation
Gallery" is still in business. A real neat place, with authentic aviation
collectables, albeit at collector's prices. Good prices on used aviation
books, though... I bought a copy of "There I was... Flat on my Back"
for $3.98, hardcover. Used to be on Kent street, just off Colfax, but they
moved just before I left town. The owner was real neat, he had a painting
of himself in a Spitfire hanging in the shop. He had never been in a Spit
in his life...

I hope this helps!
