[net.aviation] Ownership only for those who like to tinker???

jpj@mss.UUCP (J. P. Jenal) (02/11/86)

Greetings - I am considering (still!) the notion of buying my own plane -
most likely a used 172 (though I would love to fly something a bit sexier,
the 172 is probably the most reasonable compromise between my present
skills, budget and desires). In this month's _Flying_ there is a comment
in one of the columns (I forget which) that suggests that unless you really
want to tinker a lot with the plane, you should forget about owning one.

I find that statement a puzzlement - since by regulation (and ability :-)
I am restricted from making most repairs on my plane. What does this mean?
I would be interested in hearing more from those of you who made the
transition from rental to ownership - especially on a modest income. For
what it's worth, I am a 100 hour private pilot - currently taking an IFR
ground school and interested in adding that rating to my SEL. Thanks for
your consideration...

Cheers...
