[net.aviation] slam dunks

ladkin@kestrel.ARPA (Peter Ladkin) (03/15/86)

The San Mateo bridge is 6 DME from the SFO VOR, which makes
it about 5 from the threshold. The Quiet Bridge visual
approach specifies 1900 min at the bridge, which is about a
1 in 15 slope to the VOR. This is almost a 4 degree slope.
The carriers come over the bay from Sausalito, at what I'd
say was 5000, and many of them turn *over* the bridge,
rather than after. That's 3000 feet a minute, assuming a
standard rate 180. I would call that being slam dunked.
The carriers probably love it. It's the only chance they
get to play, all trip. Of course, it's hard to tell what
they do in the soup - I can't see them, of course.
All this takes place within the TCA, so entering from the
top is another issue entirely.
