[general] announcing the NEC printer

david@utzoo.UUCP (David Trueman) (06/12/84)

It was previously mentioned that we had a new printer in Room 336 that was
suitable for short documents. This printer is a "NEC Spinwriter". It
produces similar quality (arguably better) to a daisy-wheel printer such
as the Xerox printer in Room 401, and has the advantage of a more complete
set of characters. It is suitable only for shorter documents for two reasons:
it is a bit slower than other printers and it has no tractor feed, so the
paper must be straightened every few pages.

To use the NEC printer, you *must* be signed on to the terminal in the machine
room. For "ms" use a "-p npr" option, and for "format" use a "-np" option.
In either case, the printer will stop at the end of each page and wait for
a RETURN from the terminal, allowing insertion or straightening of paper.
The printer is particularly suited (and intended) for printing on letterhead.
Should you want to use the printer, please ask for help the first time.

At present there is no special charge for use of the NEC other than the
normal sign-on charge; this is subject to change in the future.
