[general] unplanned length of service outage

I apologize to all our customers for the excessive length of the service
outage today, and for twice bringing the system back up "into production"
and then having to shut down again immediately.  What should have been a
simple experiment developed serious complications, and attempts to cure
the trouble looked successful but weren't.  I finally discovered the real
cause of the problem, and fixed it.  It should not happen again.  Sorry
for any inconvenience; if this has caused serious problems for you, come
talk to us and we'll give you some credit on next month's Computer Systems
invoice to make up for it.  (Best we can do...)
