The 12-pitch (12 characters per inch) font cartridge for the laser printer has arrived (finally!). The next two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) will be the last two days when 10-pitch printing will be the default. On Thursday (Feb. 7) 12-pitch will become the default. At that time, 10-pitch will be available by option (`ms -f 10 -p hpr ...' or `format -10 -hp ...'). Note, however, that in 10-pitch, no italics or boldface will be available, except by special request. Until Thursday, 12-pitch printing will be available by special request. As some people are already aware, the laser printer is capable of producing true italics. Thus, some instructions that on other printers produced underlined text will now result in italics by default (instructions: \fItext\fR, `.I' in ms, `.UL' in format). This behaviour can be overridden in `ms' with the font option (`ms -f 12U -p hpr . . .'). Note, also, that in `ms' one can always get true underlining with the `.UL' instruction. Note that the arrival of 12-pitch for the laser printer spells the end for our beloved Sanders printer. Suggestions for suitable departure rites for the Sanders are welcome (we have some ideas ourselves . . .). Please let us know if these plans present any serious problems. -- David Trueman @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!david
