The full backup yesterday ran into a couple of minor problems. Mainly, we're out of new large tapes. I took a chance and re-used a couple of old archive sets that were due to be purged anyway; this wasn't entirely successful. I used one set as the "new" replacements for tape set 15; these worked ok. The other set was needed because of a mistake on my part: tape set B is still off-site, and it didn't occur to me that tape set A actually was free (since the last full backup was the semiyearly all-tapes-archived backup). I used old tapes to make up a temporary set C. The C.USRB tape turned out to be unacceptably bad. At this point I realized that set A was available, and used them for usr+root. All's well that ends well, sort of. The moral of the story is: the policy of not re-using old archive tapes is still the right policy, even though most of the really antique archive tapes are long gone.
