Well, the results of the attempt to install the new disk drive are mixed. It works. 99% of the time. It does everything fine (and is in fact on the system, although unused) except that once in a while the drive goes catatonic, refusing to respond. The controller times out after a couple of seconds, and a retry fixes the problem, but it's still annoying and anomalous. Before starting alignment, Matt did replace some heads which looked to be in poor shape; he speculates that the remaining heads may perhaps be in poor condition. We'll give the thing another try in a few days, once Matt replenishes his supply of new heads. The physical rearrangement of the machine room went smoothly, except that the remote-control cable connecting the cpu assembly and the power controller has not yet been hooked up again (so power to Star Ring and the 05s is manually controlled from the switch on the power controller at the moment).
